What is home insurance?
In general, home insurance is divided into two main sections: building insurance and contents insurance. Insurance policies can be taken out for these two sections together or even just one of them.
A home insurance policy will typically cover the following:
Buildings and Contents insurance
- Fire, explosion and smoke damage
- Theft or attempted theft
- Damage due to lightning or storms
- Falling tree damage
- Impact on the building’s physical structure from vehicles or animals
- Option to include accidental damage cover
What are the different types of home water damage?
Water can negatively affect your home in a number of ways. For many homeowners, the initial water leakage may be a shock, but if left untreated, water can cause more serious damage.
Home water damage can be classified in the following areas:
- Escape of water from fixed plumbing installation
This happens when water unexpectedly impacts your home, such as with a burst pipe or faulty home appliance. Some home insurers will include this area in the standard level of coverage.
- Storm and flood damage
Typically, some home insurance policies cover storm or flood damage from heavy rainfall or flooding from a natural disaster. However, it is worth noting that this coverage could be an additional item for a home insurance policy.
- Roof leaks
A damaged roof from a storm or falling tree could cause water leakage into your home. This could be covered under your home insurance policy, so it makes sense to check the details and conditions.
Does home insurance cover water damage?
In most cases, a typical home insurance policy does cover water damage to your home. For example, GasanMamo’s standard home insurance policy covers water escaping from any fixed plumbing installation, washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, water bed or fish tank.
Home insurance policies will always have special exclusions and limitations for losses as a result of escape of water. For example, loss or damage by wear and tear, or loss or damage to a fixed plumbing installation.
Example of this would be long-term water damage that happens gradually over time or water damage that occurs due to negligence of the property. When leaks aren’t repaired or appliances aren’t cared for and water damage happens as a result, this is unlikely to be covered by home insurance.
