The three types of cover available are:

• Third Party Only

This cover is the minimum required by law. It covers your liability to third parties for injury or damage to property arising from the use of your car.

• Third Party Fire & Theft

In addition to the Third Party liability cover described you can protect yourself against loss or damage to your car arising out of a fire or from theft.

• Comprehensive

If you choose this cover you are protected against accidental damage to your vehicle in addition to the cover described above. Additional protection is also provided such as loss or damage to personal effects and replacement car option if you buy Motor Plus cover.

It is your responsibility to insure your vehicle on a sum insured which reflects the current market value of your vehicle. The Malta Insurance Association(MIA) publishes a Guide to Vehicle Values (MIA Website) which will assist you in determining your vehicle’s current market value. As the market value of a vehicle is continuously changing, we recommend that you revise this value regularly since the amount payable in the event of a total loss which may be covered under your policy will be the market value at the time of the loss. This depends on whether you choose to extend the policy to cover other drivers or choose to restrict the number of drivers, which, in some cases, may result in a discount. Please remember that if you want your car to be driven by persons aged under 25 years, the premium will be considerably higher. It is important to remember that there may be instances where GasanMamo Insurance Ltd may not be willing to extend cover to other drivers. Please note that your policy continues to provide you with full protection while your car is in the custody of a motor repairer for service or repair, irrespective of any limitations on drivers.

This is the amount you will have to pay towards each and every loss for which there is a claim. This amount can vary and depends on the age of the driver at the time of an accident, the nature of the loss and any applicable endorsements (changes) issued under your policy. Full details of these excesses can be seen in the policy document, but as a general indication, the excess for a person aged 25 years or over, and driving a standard vehicle is €55 for accidental and third party damage, and €235 for theft.

The hiring of a replacement vehicle is not normally covered under the standard terms of a Motor Insurance policy.

However if you have a Comprehensive policy you have the option of extending the standard cover for the hiring of a replacement vehicle up to a specified amount, when you take out the policy or upon renewal. This means that irrespective of blame you can recover the costs to hire a replacement car when you are claiming for damages on your vehicle. The number of days for which you can hire a replacement vehicle is determined by your repairer and the surveyor and reflects the period of repairs, In any case the maximum amount which you can claim under your policy will depend on the limit you chose to extend you policy. The standard limit is €250 in any one period of insurance.

If you are not covered under a Comprehensive policy, and you are involved in a traffic accident for which you are not to blame, you are entitled to claim for the hiring of a replacement vehicle from the third party’s insurers if the third party is found to be responsible for the accident.

It is recommended that before you hire a replacement vehicle you contact the insurer concerned in order to confirm the rate and the amount of days you are entitled to hire for.

This depends very much on the cover you have chosen. The following are some examples:

• No Claims Discount: You can earn up to 60% discount (see the next question)
• Limited Drivers: If you limit driving to yourself or you and your spouse you can earn up to 10% discount
• Higher Excess: You can increase the excess from €55 to €115 or even €235 for a further 10% discount
• More than one vehicle insured: If you insure more than one vehicle with is you earn a 10% discount
• Car Alarm: Installing an approved Car Alarm will entitle you to a discount depending on the alarm type.

If you do not make a claim your premium will be discounted. You start off with 20% for the first year and end up with 60% after four years. This discount is transferable only as follows:

• from one insurer to another
• from one car to another
• between husband and wife
• between an individual and a limited liability company (if individual owns more than 50% shareholding).

If you spend more than one year at 60% on a Comprehensive Policy you can earn a further 5% Careful Drivers Discount. After two years with 60% your discount will be automatically "protected", i.e. you can make one claim and this will not affect your discount.

If a claim is reported under your policy, your no claims discount will be effected as follows upon renewal:

If you are insured under a Third Party Only policy all of your no claims discount will be lost.

If you are insured under a Third Party Fire & Theft or a Comprehensive policy your No Claims Discount will "step-back" by two years.

If however, if you enjoy 60% NCD under your Comprehensive policy it may be "protected" if you have spent more than two claim-free years at 60%. This protection only applies when the person in charge of the vehicle at the time of the accident is 25 years of age or over.

If after your NCD has been effected and eventually you are found not to have been responsible for the incident, your NCD will not be lost. This is however subject to us having been able to make a full recovery of the full amount paid under your claim.

We strongly recommend that you report to us immediately any incident that may lead to a claim.

If you hold a Comprehensive policy then, irrespective of whether you are responsible or not, you are entitled to claim for compensation of your damages under your policy and we will then take the necessary action to settle your claim.

If you hold a Third Party Policy or a Third Party Fire & Theft policy we can offer you advice as how best to proceed to counter any claims for compensation from a third party and how to recover any damages you incurred.

Assuming that your policy covers the incident which caused the total loss, the maximum amount we will pay you will be the market value of your vehicle at the time of the loss as established by our motor surveyor. The amount payable is limited in any case to your estimate of value that is shown on the Policy Schedule.

Your policy provides Third Party cover for all the EU member states for up to a period of 90 days in any one period of insurance. If you wish to cover also the own damage risk (Fire, Theft or Accidental Damage) you will need to ask us to extend your policy cover to the country you will be visiting.
